I broke my blog’s comment section…

I messed up.

And this would all be easier if I knew exactly HOW I messed up… but it’s been almost 24 hours and I still have no idea.

You might have noticed on the post I published yesterday about going minimalist that there either wasn’t a place to put comments or it said “comments are closed.” That wasn’t supposed to happen.

Back up a couple days – after logging onto my WordPress account to check comments and discovering that a disgruntled, racist individual went through and left about twenty vile comments (both as general comments AND as replies to other people – which means they got an email notifying them of the new reply) on some of my old posts and I had the ‘brilliant’ idea to disable comments on posts older than two months.

Don’t get me wrong, I love interacting with y’all on my blog and social media, especially Facebook and Twitter… but I’ve noticed an unfortunate trend: new comments I get on old posts are usually either spammers (promoting “The Love Doctor,” or spell-casters to make your dreams come true, dating websites, etc) or trolls (who swoop in to leaving racist/sexist/homophobic remarks and trying to pick fights in the comment section).

The plan was to turn off comments on posts older than two months for a while and see what happened.

And when I published my blog post about minimalism yesterday, I double-checked to make sure that people could still comment on it.

Everything looked good:

Except a couple hours later, I got an email from a long-time reader asking if I had intentionally turned off comments (because it was a sensitive topic).

Confused, I checked my blog again.

Nope, “Share your thoughts” was still working.

So I opened the post in an incognito tab and discovered that oops:

So I checked some older posts.

On my end, when I’m logged into my WordPress account or Ryosuke’s account, I see this:

But when I’m logged out…

Comments section is closed.

I spent a couple hours yesterday trying to undo accidentally closing comments.

But even when I restored everything to the way it was before, the comments section is still showing up as closed. I’ve contacted WordPress support and hopefully will get things sorted out.

In the mean time… find me on Facebook and Twitter?
