Comic: Trying to “Google Search” our Names (in middle school)

OB_15_16 comic comics life in japan texan in tokyo cartoon google search your name

Why. Why, why, why. Someone please tell me what kind of sick person turns off “safe search” on a school computer???

The first time I had used a computer with internet connection was in middle school. I took a typing class. I also made a Neopets account (and used to sneak to the lab in between breaks to feed my pets). Those were good times.

The first time I had unrestricted access to a laptop with internet connection was in high school (boarding school).

Now my full-time job involves using computers (and internet). Times really have changed.

So. This comic.

Back when I was in middle school / early high school, the internet was still a relatively new “thing.” If you’re young, it might be difficult to imagine a world without regular internet/Facebook/YouTube. But there was life before the internet. Really. I swear.

[This comic was kind of inspired by this comic, that I drew a while ago]

  1. I think everybody already searched your name in google once in life. But, poor friend…
I played Neopets when I was a kid too! And pokemon online games.

  3. I’m so old that I remember using a relic called an encyclopedia to look up information or having to physically go into a library to research stuff. One I got onto the internet in the early 1990s, I used something called Netscape Navigator to look up stuff.

    • Haha – I remember Netscape Navigator! My parents had an encyclopedia set – I used to read it for fun. Dial-up was so slow I rarely used it for research – it was more fun to spend my time making a geocities homepage! ;)

  4. I am old so a world without internet is called awesome childhood haha

    • The first time I had access to the internet at “home” was when I was in boarding school (in high school). I had a pretty adventuresome childhood up until them~

I still have a Black Kougra stuffed animal from ten years ago?
I wonder if anyone ever played that RPG Nerf game…feel like I was in the only school who played it… (。•́︿•̀。)

  6. Hee, Neopets…I’d always try to refresh and refresh to try to get things from that freecycle tree thing, but it was always just flip flops and worthless stuff…too slow.

I remember googling ‘poesjes’ when I was 12, which is Dutch for kittens. It also means naked ladies…T_T Ah, unintended porn googling…I also loved Neopets <3

  8. Wait, what?
You used GOOGLE in MIDDLE SCHOOL???? O_O; ….
    Now, I feel EXTREMELY old! ;___; …… *g*

  9. My husband and I met on Neopets of all places we will have been married for 14 years in a month.

  10. I remember neopets! My little dragon must be starving!! ;)

    LOL :D

But wait a minute, now that I’m thinking about that….didn’t you said you’re 21 years old? :o
I’m 25, and even though I’m living in a second-world developing country I can still remember that most of my friends in primary school were connected to the internet (in their homes) via dial-up connection…

    • I’m American and have used Internet since Grace was in elementary and I was younger than that… I’m really surprised she didn’t use Internet until middle school.

  12. Did you ever Google “Cleopatra?” Don’t. SO. MUCH. PORN.

When my niece was eight years old, I wanted to get her a software program called “Barbie’s Fashion Show.” So I did a search for “Barbie” and “CD.” NOT a good idea….

  13. Ahaha I did the same thing! I sort of miss Neopets..

    • I hate to burst your bubble, but…. There’s nothing to miss about neopets. ;-; used to play there some 8 years back.
Now they sold the site and you can get your account frozen without a warning, for the smallest thing. [not sure you knew, but it’s definitely not what it used to be]

  14. I think I started with Internet back in 1999/2000 when I was about 12. Back then there was no safe search but then again there was also much less to be found online. I still remember how terrible displeased we were in Computer classes on how old our equipment was in the school :)
